Project Index

A home renovation, especially one of this size, is extremely intimidating until it's broken up into bite-sized chunks. Too big? Too much? No idea where to start? Simply break it into a series of projects. Still too big? Break the projects into even more projects. Eventually they become manageable.

We're still breaking them up into bite-sized chunks. You'll find them here. Lots and lots of them.

Did I mention lots and lots of them? Phew boy!

A note about "order of operations" and project catagories:

We have three basic goals with our projects.

  1. Livability...that is...the house is comfortable and safe to occupy as a home base while we are working. It is simply too far to commute on a daily basis.
  2. Preservation: There are problems and conditions that must be addressed to prevent further detioration of the property.
  3. Renovation/restoration: Projects that are improving the house to the final configuration.

Obviously, projects can belong to multiple catagories, but the effect here is that a logical order of projects may not apply. They can be rearranged by the current needs. On top of that, budget and weather can change the order as well. We did the closet removal since it was dark and cold outside and we couldn't get to weatherproofing at the moment, even though it was more important. Electric service replacement was more important than either of those, but we didn't have the materials on hand. We did the heat first simply because we had to have it so the house was livable.
